Overview

China automation sourcing is a supplier-matching problem.

China has a deep industrial automation supplier base, but the market is not one category. A buyer may need a robot cell integrator, a custom machine builder, a packaging line OEM, a vision inspection specialist, a controls engineering team, or a full production line contractor. Each type has a different risk profile.

The right starting point is not a vendor list. It is a clear definition of the operation you need to automate, the throughput you need, the quality limits you must hit, and the support model your plant can maintain after installation.

Types of automation suppliers in China

Robot integrators

Build robot cells for welding, palletizing, machine tending, dispensing, polishing, sorting, and material handling. The key checks are fixture design, safety, robot programming, cycle time proof, and on-site commissioning.

Special-purpose machine builders

Design custom equipment for assembly, pressing, screwdriving, leak testing, trimming, cutting, feeding, labeling, and inspection. The key checks are mechanical engineering depth and repeatability evidence.

Packaging automation OEMs

Supply filling, sealing, flow wrapping, cartoning, case packing, labeling, check weighing, and palletizing systems. The key checks are product format range, changeover method, and sanitation or industry standards.

Machine vision companies

Provide camera inspection, OCR, measurement, presence detection, defect detection, barcode verification, and reject handling. The key checks are lighting, false reject rate, sample coverage, and data output.

Component and controls suppliers

Sell servos, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, conveyors, end effectors, pneumatics, and control cabinets. They may be useful as part suppliers, but they are not always responsible for full line performance.

Turnkey line integrators

Coordinate several machines into one line. The key checks are line balancing, controls integration, buffer strategy, safety zoning, installation ownership, and single-point accountability.

How to qualify automation suppliers in China

A good qualification process filters for proof, not sales confidence. Ask for comparable equipment, engineering organization, component choices, testing method, and service commitments before discussing final price.

Check What to request What strong evidence looks like
Similar projects Videos, photos, reference line layouts, customer industry, cycle time, and installed year. The supplier has delivered a process close to yours, not just a generic automation demo.
Engineering team Mechanical, electrical, software, vision, and commissioning headcount. Named project owners and evidence of in-house engineering rather than outsourced design only.
Controls and safety PLC brand, HMI, servo system, safety relay or safety PLC, guarding, interlocks, and documentation. The supplier can explain the architecture and maintainability tradeoffs in plain technical language.
Factory acceptance test FAT checklist, sample requirements, test duration, output target, reject rules, and punch-list process. The test proves line performance under realistic conditions before shipment.
After-sales support Remote support hours, spare parts list, manuals, training plan, warranty, and site visit availability. Support is defined in the quote and does not depend on vague promises after payment.

What a China automation RFQ should include

The RFQ should make the supplier quote the same problem you actually need solved. Without this, every supplier fills gaps with assumptions, and the cheapest quote may simply be the least complete quote.

  • Product drawings, photos, tolerances, material, dimensions, weight, and expected variation.
  • Current manual process video and the pain point you are trying to remove.
  • Target cycle time, daily volume, planned shifts, and expected uptime.
  • Quality checks, reject criteria, traceability requirements, and data logging needs.
  • Preferred robot, PLC, servo, HMI, camera, sensor, and pneumatic brands if your plant has standards.
  • Factory floor limits: layout, utilities, compressed air, power, guarding, aisle clearance, and operator access.
  • Factory acceptance test requirements and the number of samples you will provide.
  • Installation country, documentation language, training needs, remote support expectations, and spare parts requirements.

Red flags when sourcing automation equipment from China

Quote arrives too fast

Fast quotes are useful for budget signals, but a serious custom automation quote should include clarifying questions and technical assumptions.

No comparable project evidence

If the supplier cannot show similar equipment or explain differences from your use case, project risk moves to you.

Unclear FAT method

A supplier that will not define acceptance criteria before deposit may be difficult to hold accountable later.

Controls lock-in

Ask who owns the PLC and HMI code, whether backups are supplied, and how your maintenance team will troubleshoot.

How Automate China helps

We help buyers avoid supplier mismatch by defining the requirement, searching the right Chinese supplier category, comparing quotes on scope, and validating the supplier before a purchase decision. For larger projects, we also support factory visits, FAT planning, video inspection, punch lists, and install readiness.
